Despite socio-economic developments in the country, the gender pay gap remains a challenge in most states. According to the Washington Post, on average women take home 79 percent of what their male counterparts do for the same type of work. It’s worse given racial gender disparity that exists alongside unequal pay. Luckily for employees in Maryland, there’s a new labor law poster.
The New Maryland Labor Law Poster – Prohibits Gender Based Discrimination
The Maryland equal pay for equal work Act outlaws discrimination at the workplace on the basis of sex. The law, which is seen as the legal reinforcement to equal provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) in Maryland, forbids provision of lesser employment opportunities and wages on the basis of gender. It also allows workers the right to negotiation and information about promotions.

The new Maryland labor law poster also helps promote transparency at the workplace. It enlightens women to negotiate for better and secure equal pay by allowing them to discuss and seek information about wages within the organization without fear of retaliation. The new law prohibits employers from compelling their employees to sign waivers that forbid such discussions and info requests.
The New Maryland Labor Law Poster – Discourages Unnecessary Wage Talk
While the state regulation as displayed in the new Maryland labor law poster does not encourage unnecessary wage-related discussions or disclosure of another employee’s income, it protects the employee who’s found reasonably engaging in the same by prohibiting the employer from taking adverse action against him/her whether they are doing the same for themselves or helping others.
The New Maryland Labor Law Poster – Protects Employees from Retaliation
When aggrieved, an employee can file a complaint with the enforcement commission on his/her own behalf or on behalf of his/her colleagues. In the event of retaliation, the worker has a period of up to 3 years from the time he/she receives wages paid upon termination to file the complaint. The Commission can therefore either take up the case or seek the assistance of the Attorney General.

It is also important to note that a signed agreement with the employee to work for less than is the standard rate cannot be used as a defense for such gender bias as provided for in this law. The Maryland equal pay for equal work Act allows the enforcement commission to impose injunctive relief for the employee and recover the variance between what s/he was paid and should be paid.
